First Grade Homework Sheet Week of Dec. 12, 2011

First Grade Homework Sheet
Week of Dec. 12, 2011
Thank you very much for all of the delicious baked goods for our Bake Sale yesterday.  We had the nicest selection of items and most were homemade!  Thank you to Heather and Paula who handled the set-up/clean-up and organizing volunteers and donations.  It was a beautiful day and many parishioners enjoyed our hospitality!  I am not sure what our profit is because any leftovers will be sold at school Monday at recess.  If you did not donate a baked item or $5, please send in your $5 which is our standard amount per student for class bake sales.  I will let you know our final amount and what I will purchase for the classroom using these funds.
All this week you may send in your child’s Advent Mission box.  We will see that these are given to Sister Camillus who forwards proceeds to the Holy Childhood Association.  Thank you for supporting a worthy cause and teaching your children to be Ambassadors of Hope to those who are suffering.
Wednesday is Free Dress for $1 and a Skating Party.
Thursday will be our last day before Christmas Vacation and we always celebrate with a school Mass.  You are welcome to join us at Mass at 8:15 that day.  Of course, Mass Day means FULL UNIFORM for all students!
On Thursday we will also celebrate with a Christmas Party.  Heather is providing pizza for lunch for our class as her treat!   We will have a class party after lunch and some parents are providing craft projects and we will also have treats in the classroom.  If you would like to help, please give Heather or Paula a call.  Thank you in advance for making it a fun day for our First Graders!  There will be no homework or spelling list this week!!!!!
I would like to wish all of my dear First Grade families a very blessed and Merry Christmas and Happy New Year!

First Grade Homework Sheet Week of Dec. 5, 2011

First Grade Homework Sheet
Week of Dec. 5, 2011
This is a very busy week for First Grade and the whole school!  Our Bake Sale is this coming Sunday, Dec. 11 after all of the Masses.  Heather sent home a sign-up sheet last week and I have only seen 3 returned.  This event requires all of the First Grade parents/families to donate baked goods and/or a $5 donation plus volunteers to work a shift at the sale.  Please respond as soon as possible, and if you didn’t see the sign-up sheet, please call Heather Guereca for details and to help.  The proceeds from this Bake Sale go toward purchasing educational items for our class.
This week is also Santa’s Workshop for the whole school.  This event is an opportunity for your child to purchase Christmas gifts for his/her family members.  Volunteers help the students to choose and purchase and wrap gifts for their family.  Of course participation is optional, but if you would like your child to buy gifts, please send money in a marked envelope for your child on Tues.-Thurs. this week.  I know the students enjoy shopping and buying gifts on their own for their family so this is a very nice activity for them.
This Thursday is a Holy Day of Obligation in our Church celebrating the Feast of the Immaculate Conception.  The whole school attends Mass at 8:15, and I would like to invite our First Grade families to attend Mass with us.  Of course, a Mass day means FULL UNIFORM for all students (no shorts!!!!).
Our Spelling Test will be on Thursday this week because there is no school on Friday.  All of the teachers will be participating in curriculum mapping which is an ongoing assignment for us.

First Grade Homework Sheet
Week of Nov. 7, 2011

I would like to wish all of our military service men and women Happy Veterans’ Day.  My husband is a retired Navy Captain who served on nuclear submarines with 28 years of service.  Our son is currently a Navy Lieutenant serving on the USS Michigan, a Trident submarine in the Pacific, as well as, being the Submarine Liaison officer for Navy Seal Teams.  My father was an Army officer and helicopter pilot.  I know the sacrifices which are made by our military and their families, and we all need to take a minute and honor and thank them.  This truly is the land of the free because of the brave!!!!!!!
I hope you are all working on your Family Turkey Projects.  Your child can bring it in any time this week, and I would like all of them by next Monday.  Because of the short week, we will NOT have a new spelling this, and no words need to be written each night.  We will be doing review exercises in class.
One more reminder:  there is no hot lunch on Tuesday because it is Election Day and the hall will be used for voting.

First Grade Homework Sheet
Week of Oct. 17, 2011
I would like to thank all 11 of our field trip drivers!  We had a great day in beautiful Oak Glen learning about apples.  The staff at Los Rios Rancho complimented me on how well-behaved and academically prepared our class always was when we visit the apple orchard.  I was very proud of our First Graders, and hopefully we can go on many more educational and fun field trips!
Now is the time to collect your pledged money for the Math-A-Thon.  Please turn the money in to me, not the office.  Each teacher keeps track of the amounts pledged and collected before turning it over to the office.
I have included copies of the recognized pre-primer and primer sight word lists with this homework packet.  These should be review for all first graders.  Please start working with your child to be able to read and comprehend these words.  These lists correspond with our
Open Court Reading
program and should be mastered by each student.  In a couple of weeks I will include the “First Grade” sight word list.
This Friday we will try again to have a “board games and videos” afternoon.  Board games only, no video or electronic games, please.  We will not have Show and Tell that day.

First Grade Homework Sheet Week of Oct. 10, 2011

First Grade Homework Sheet
Week of Oct. 10, 2011

This is a very busy week for First Grade!  Our first field trip is Tuesday, and if you signed up to be a driver, please be at the Mary statue by 8:30 that morning.  Also, be sure to send a lunch and a drink with your student for that day.  We will be having a picnic at the apple orchard and there will be no food bought there.  Please do not send any money with your student as we will not have time for any shopping!
The Math-A-Thon is this Friday, Oct. 14.  Every family received a sponsor sheet in their monthly tuition envelope, but if you need another one, you can get one on the school website or in the office.  Every student will take the Math-A-Thon test as part of their regular math grade for the week so why not take advantage of this 100% fundraiser and get some sponsors!!!!  Please sign your student’s sponsor sheet and make sure they bring it in on Friday!  Our test will consist of several of our addition and subtraction facts which we have been practicing so there is nothing to study before the event.  Friday is also Free Dress for $1 if you choose to participate.
I will be sending home a couple of lists of sight words for you to practice with your child in the next couple of weeks.  This will be review for some, but good practice for all.  Please be sure you supervise your child’s homework and practice reading with them every night.  I would also recommend that you help them with their spelling words orally in addition to more time with the written assignment.  Many of our students are getting excellent grades on our spelling tests, but others seem to need more help.  I have also included our next five lists of spelling words; there is no list #6, just review time.
Thank you all for all you do!

I am so happy that every student turned in their permission slip and money for our field trip by the deadline last Friday!!!!  The field trip is a week from Thursday, and we are busy learning all about the apple tree life cycle, types of apples, products made from apples, etc.  It will be a great experience for our First Graders and the 15th year in a row my class has taken this trip.
I hope all of our First Grade parents have been checking GradeLink.  Through my program, I can actually see who and when you have logged on to check your child’s grades.  Don’t forget to use the “Letter Grade” mode, not percent!  If you are experiencing any difficulty in accessing your child’s grades, please let Mr. Nystrom know.  There will be a Parent Education Night on Oct. 13, and Mr. Nystrom will be presenting information on GradeLink so if you have any questions, please attend the meeting and discuss them with him.  This week I will be returning graded papers on Tuesday instead of Monday.  All papers which are returned are posted on GradeLink also.  Have a great week!!!

First Grade Homework Sheet
Week of Sept. 26, 2011
All field trip permission slips and money are due this Friday, Sept. 30.  Please turn these in to me (NOT THE OFFICE!) in a timely manner so I can get a final number for our reservations.  Remember if you are planning on driving, your Live Scan fingerprints must be on file in the office and you have completed the safe driving online course and have emailed the results to the school office also.  If you do not wish your child to go on this field trip, you must make arrangements to keep your child home that day.
This Friday will be our first “Show and Tell” opportunity.  Your child may bring something interesting from home to share with the class.  This will involve the student describing the item and answering questions about it.  There will not be “play time” per say, but will enable each student to practice speaking in front of the class and describing something that is important to him/her.  Obviously, I don’t recommend sending something valuable or breakable, and if your child wants to take it outside for recess to play, he/she is responsible for it.

Monday:  Write Spelling Words List #4 five times each;

First Grade Homework Sheet
Week of Sept. 19, 2011

Our First Graders have been working very hard!  Everyone seems to understand our policies and procedures and we are learning how to work together.  There are several important items in this homework pack so please read through everything carefully.
I have enclosed the permission slip for our first field trip to Oak Glen on October 11.  We are going to Los Rios Rancho apple orchards and packing house.  This is an excellent field trip; I have taken my class for 15 years in a row!  We are studying plants, trees, etc. in science with emphasis on the life cycle of apple trees.  I hope that many of you can drive for the field trip.  All drivers need to have fingerprints on file in the office, safe environment training, and the new safe driving course completed online.  Please check in the office if you have any questions as to your status.
The signed permission slip and $7 per person are due no later than Sept. 30.  Drivers and students each have to pay the $7 to go on the trip.  Of course, school and Diocesan rules state that no siblings may accompany classes on field trips.  I need the permission slip and money turned in at the same time, please!
Our wonderful Room Parents have included an informational letter including upcoming special events, parties, contact phone numbers, and opportunities for volunteering.  I really appreciate Heather and Paula for stepping up to organize class activities and help with communication.  There are many events that require volunteers so I thank you all in advance for helping them make this a great year!

First Grade Homework Sheet Week of September 12, 2011

First Grade Homework Sheet
Week of September 12, 2011

It was wonderful meeting so many First Grade parents at Back-to-School Night last Thursday.  I hope this is the start of a great learning year with collaboration between all of us who care so much about these precious children.  I did want to remind all parents about the importance of each child having the proper school supplies.  We have done a few art projects already and several students have not had scissors, glue, or glue sticks.  Every day so far MANY students do not have the required six SHARPENED pencils to do their work.  It is too time consuming to let each student sharpen pencils every day.  I remind the children before they go home to put pencils in their backpacks to sharpen at home.
Please check the school supplies list for our grade and make sure your child has six sharpened pencils, liquid glue, glue sticks, scissors, crayons, erasers, and a ruler at all times!!!!  Thank you so much for helping your child to be prepared for school!!!
This Thursday will be our first school Skating Party of the year.  I hope many of you can attend and enjoy meeting other parents and families and sharing a good time together.  As usual, we do not assign homework on Skating Party nights.
Friday is our second Spelling Test so please help your child study this week.  Per my homework schedule, have your child practice the words every night and quiz them so they are confident taking the test each Friday.

First Grade Homework Sheet Week of September 5, 2011

First Grade Homework Sheet
Week of Sept. 5, 2011

I believe we had a successful first week of school.  The students and I are getting to know each other and learning the policies and procedures of our class.  At the beginning of every year I am reminded of the extreme honor given to me by you parents to take part in your child’s learning and development.  I thank each of you in advance for this honor and I look forward to working with you to make this the best year ever!
This week we will be starting our Spelling Lists.  The third page of this packet is a copy of Lists 1-5. I do not send home a new list each week so please keep this in a safe place for the next five weeks.
Each night’s homework will include copying these words a certain number of times.  Please have your child copy these words neatly on writing paper (any kind) at home each night and return the words with the next day’s homework.  That will mean that usually each day your student will be returning two pages of homework.  Make sure to return only the required assignment each day.  Last week there were several students who did not have completed homework and this week I will start giving orange cards for incomplete or missing homework.
The next page of this packet is your GradeLink login information and username and password.  I will be posting the first grades of the year next weekend and every weekend after that and will return graded papers every Monday starting next week.

PE will begin this Tuesday and students should wear proper PE uniform every Tuesday.  Of course, if your student did not wear PE uniform today, he/she will not be penalized because this is the first day.
This Thursday is Back-to-School Night at 6:00p.m.  This is a night for parents (adults) only so please make arrangements for your children to stay at home.  If you have to bring your child, he/she will have to sit outside the classroom in the hall so perhaps bring them a book to read or something to occupy them.  I will be going over a lot of information about my policies and procedures, as well as, the year’s curriculum, important dates, and events.  Remember this is an evening for adults only please!
Picture Day is Monday, September 12th!  All students should be in full uniform of course.  Blue or white shirts are acceptable, but no PE shirts.  Remember to send back the picture envelope which went home last Friday!!!

Dear 1st Grade Parents,

Welcome to 1st Grade!  I am really looking forward to our new school year.  At the beginning of a new year, it is very important for all students to understand the policies and procedures of our classroom.  I will be spending a lot of time explaining and emphasizing our class rules and the resulting consequences for not following our rules.  I will be discussing these in detail with you at Back to School Night (Open House).
As part of your child’s homework tonight, I would like you to take some time to read over these rules together and discuss them.  Please sign this letter and return it tomorrow in your child’s Homework Folder.  When I receive this back tomorrow, I will know that you have taken the time to discuss our class rules with your child.
          Thank you very much.
                                                                             Mrs. Kondrack

First Grade Homework Sheet
Week of June 6, 2011

I can’t believe that it is the last week of school already!  This year has flown by and our First Graders have grown physically, academically, socially, and spiritually.  I am so happy with the progress they all have made.  This class has been very excited about learning and we have shared many, many wonderful moments.  I will miss them all, and they have started saying they will miss me too!  I did remind them that they could write to me and I will write back.
I hope you all have a fantastic summer and I hope you keep your new “Second Grader” reading and learning.  Please take advantage of the library and children’s book stores in our area.  If you go on trips, have your child keep a journal and take lots of pictures so he/she can write a story about it when you get back.  Ask them to tell you what time it is and how much change you received.  Please let them help you in the kitchen and outdoors; they love to feel important.
I hope to see you all at our Awards Ceremony in our classroom on Tuesday morning at 8:30.  The times for all of the grades’ awards are staggered so parents can attend each child’s ceremony.  We have a grand total of 30 minutes so please be on time as I have about 70 certificates to give to our wonderful students!  Those of you who can stay later can share some refreshments with us.
Please check the school calendar for all of the events of this week.  Remember Sports Day on Thursday and Mass on Friday.  There is no After Care on Friday so all children need to be picked up at 12:00.
I really can’t express my gratitude for all of the wonderful support and help you all have extended to me this year.  Ms. Rose has been amazing, and so many of you have volunteered in the classroom, driven on field trips, facilitated class parties, helped at Bake Sales, and many other activities.  I will never forget all of you and your families, and I am totally humbled by the honor you have shown me in letting me teach and love your children.
God Bless You!

                                        Love,
                                        Mrs. Terry Kondrack
