First Grade Homework Sheet Week of Feb. 6, 2012

First Grade Homework Sheet

Week of February 6, 2012

I hope you all will contact Heather or Paula to lend a hand with our Valentine’s Day Party.  The party will be on Feb. 14, Valentine’s Day, of course, and our Room Moms could use some help.  Please have your child sign his/her Valentines FROM______.  Do not have them address each Valentine to a particular student.  This helps immensely with the distribution at the party.  FunFair will be here before we know it so I am glad Heather mentioned it in her letter.  Every family is required to contribute time and effort to make our major fundraiser a success.  More information will be coming on this event.

If you are able to help with our Learning Centers on Wednesdays and Thursdays, I would appreciate your letting me know by returning my sign-up letter.  This Thursday will be Free Dress for students who have contributed foot powder for our “Sweet on Soldiers” program.  Friday will be Free Dress for $1.

First Grade Homework Sheet Week of Jan. 23, 2012

First Grade Homework Sheet

Week of Jan. 23, 2012

Please check with your student regarding the status of his/her school supplies.  Several children need new liquid glue, glue sticks, sharpened pencils, and even crayons at this point in the school year.  There are also a few students who still do not have a ruler or have lost their scissors.  Thank you to all who have sent in another box of tissues and wipes.  If you haven’t sent in any yet, please do so as soon as possible.  Our supply is really low.  We could also use rolls of paper towels.  Thank you so much.

There is a new set of spelling lists included with this homework packet.  Please keep it handy for the next five weeks.

Also, please supervise your child’s homework.  Many students do not finish all of the instructions or turn in the correct assignments when they are due.  Now that we are having more homework each night it is very important to make sure that they have the appropriate set of pages for each day.  Whenever your child is absent, please make sure that all of the work that he/she has missed is completed and sent back to school.  Especially items like Spelling tests and Religion tests.  If they are absent on Friday, it is up to the parent to give them the tests at home.  Also please remember that reading with your child is expected every night in addition to the assigned pages.  This is so important to their reading progress and success.  Thank you.

First Grade Homework Sheet Week of Jan. 16, 2012

First Grade Homework Sheet

Week of Jan. 16, 2012

This is another busy week for First Grade.  On Thursday, Jan. 19 I will be hosting our First Grade Parent Education Night in our classroom at 6:00p.m. until 7:00p.m.  Ms. Forbush will be hosting the Second Grade in her room at the same time.  This will be a “Family Reading Night” format so I would like parents, siblings, first graders, etc. to attend.  Please bring your favorite books from home to read and pillows/blankets to get cozy on the floor to share special reading time!  I will be presenting reading strategies I use in the classroom with lots of hints on how to make your student a better reader.  I will have handouts and reading lists and other goodies to take home.  I hope to see you all Thursday night.  With that in mind, I have scheduled Thursday as a no homework night so hopefully many of you can attend.

The other big event this week is the Jog-A-Thon on Friday, Jan. 20.  Every student who participates must have a signed sponsor sheet Friday morning.  These went home in the Jan. newsletter, but if you need another one, you can get one off the website or from the office.  Participants may wear free dress that day with closed-toe running type shoes, of course.  If you do not want your child to participate, that is fine; he/she must wear full uniform that day and will stay inside with the teacher supervisor.

First Grade Homework Sheet
Week of Jan. 9, 2012

I am very happy to say that all of our First Graders completed the additional homework which started last week without any problems.  Let’s keep up the good work and stay on task to finish all of our work at school and at home!
I went to Lakeshore Learning and was able to buy many items to complement our Learning Centers supplies, more supplementary manipulative products, Phonics Dictionaries for each student, and many other items.  Thank you all again for having such a successful Bake Sale!
I did want to give you all a “heads up” about the Parent Education Night that Mrs. Forbush (2nd grade) and I are conducting next Thursday, Jan. 19.  Every year each teacher at OLA prepares and presents a Parent Education Night to aid parents in helping their students.  We are doing our annual “Family Reading Night” for all first grade and second grade families.  It is on the school calendar for January and I will remind everyone next week also.  Students and their families come with pillows and blankets to relax on to read their favorite books.  I will be presenting several reading strategies for our grade level, as well as other helpful hints to help your child be a successful reader.  I will demonstrate our Accelerated Reader program and hopefully a first grader will show you how we take the comprehension tests.
Our 7th and 8th graders are going to attend the Youth Mass on Friday at the University of Redlands Chapel.  They are asking for donations of canned goods or non-perishable items to bring as community outreach for those less fortunate.  You can send in items all this week.  Thank you for your generosity.

First Grade Homework Sheet Week of Jan. 2, 2012

First Grade Homework Sheet
Week of Jan. 2, 2012
Happy New Year!!!  Please help your student to start the New Year with enthusiasm and new supplies!  Make sure your child has his/her proper school supplies including liquid and stick glue, five or six sharpened pencils, ruler, crayons, and scissors.  We are running short on tissues and wipes too.  I would really appreciate it if everyone could send in another box of tissues and wipes.  Thank you so much!
I would like to thank our two room moms and all who helped make our class Christmas Party such a success!!  All of the children had a good time and I really appreciate the time and care that went into the planning of our event.
I also want to thank everyone for such a successful Bake Sale in December.  Our final total was $274.93!!!!!  Again, everyone’s contributions of time and talent made it happen!  I will be purchasing supplementary supplies for our Learning Centers which will start later this month as well as more books and manipulatives to support our curriculum.  I will give you specifics after I do my shopping!  Thank you all.
Every year after Christmas Vacation I add additional homework to enhance our classroom progress.  Assignments will be more challenging and students will be responsible for more written activities.  Each night there will be two pages of written work, as well as spelling.  Your child will turn in two written activities such as phonics and math in addition to his/her spelling assignment each day.  PLEASE supervise your child’s homework and help them to bring in the appropriate assignments each day.
This Friday we will be attending Mass with the whole school as it is the First Friday.  Please join us if you can.  Of course, Mass day means full uniform (long pants for boys and dresses for girls).  Also, with the possible colder weather this winter remember that the Handbook states if your child wears a heavy coat, they need to have the OLA sweatshirt on underneath.  Girls may wear WHITE tights only (not blue or black).  If you have any questions, please check out the School Handbook or talk to Ms. Visco who is our uniform moderator.
School yearbooks go on sale this month for $30.  We encourage you to order early because each month the price goes up!
