Class Rules Parent Letter

Dear 1^st Grade Parents,

          Welcome to 1^st Grade!  I am really looking forward to our new school year.  At the beginning of a new year, it is very important for all students to understand the policies and procedures of our classroom.  I will be spending a lot of time explaining and emphasizing our class rules and the resulting consequences for not following our rules.  I will be discussing these in detail with you at Back to School Night (Open House).

          As part of your child’s homework tonight, I would like you to take some time to read over these rules together and discuss them.  Please sign this letter and return it tomorrow in your child’s Homework Folder.  When I receive this back tomorrow, I will know that you have taken the time to discuss our class rules with your child.

Class Rules for 1^st Grade:

1.          Listen when others are talking.

2.         Follow directions.

3.         Keep hands, feet, and objects to yourself.

4.         Work quietly and do not disturb others.

5.         Show respect for school and personal property.

6.         Work and play in a safe manner.

Consequences for not following class rules:

Green Card – good behavior, everyone starts with green

Yellow Card – first verbal warning for unacceptable behavior

Orange Card – second infraction, student misses recess

Blue Card – third infraction, student misses recess and writes lines at home with parent signature

Red Card – fourth infraction, Detention

I have read and understand the first grade class rules and consequences.  I have discussed this with my child.

Dear Parents,

        A homework sheet like this one will be sent home the first day of every week.  Please check your child’s backpack and purple Homework Folder every day.  Please supervise your child’s homework and make sure it is complete and neat!

        Please have your child return only the homework that is due each day.  We have homework every Monday through Thursday night each week.  Our homework assignments are always posted on the school website under my blog.  There are usually one or two activities due each day.  Sometimes we have to change our schedule and homework will change accordingly.  That is why I would appreciate it if you send only the pages that are due each day.  If we have to modify our schedule, I will notify you (and your student will know, too!).

        Parents—please complete “Tell Me About Your Child”; read and sign Class Rules page and School Handbook compliance page (from the back of the Handbook) if your child is the oldest in your family at our school.

        I can’t believe that it is the last week of school already!  This year has flown by and our First Graders have grown physically, academically, socially, and spiritually.  I am so happy with the progress they all have made.  This class has been very excited about learning and we have shared many, many wonderful moments.  I will miss them all, and they have started saying they will miss me too!  I did remind them that they could write to me and I will write back.

 I hope you all have a fantastic summer and I hope you keep your new “Second Grader” reading and learning.  Please take advantage of the library and children’s book stores in our area.  If you go on trips, have your child keep a journal and take lots of pictures so he/she can write a story about it when you get back.  Ask them to tell you what time it is and how much change you received.  Please let them help you in the kitchen and outdoors; they love to feel important.

I hope to see you all at our Awards Ceremony in our classroom on Tuesday morning at 8:30.  The times for all of the grades’ awards are staggered so parents can attend each child’s ceremony.  We have a grand total of 30 minutes so please be on time as I have about 70 certificates to give to our wonderful students!  Those of you who can stay later can share some refreshments with us.

Please check the school calendar for all of the events of this week.  Remember Sports Day on Thursday and Mass on Friday.  There is no After Care on Friday so all children need to be picked up at 12:00.

I really can’t express my gratitude for all of the wonderful support and help you all have extended to me this year.  Ms. Rose has been amazing, and so many of you have volunteered in the classroom, driven on field trips, facilitated class parties, helped at Bake Sales, and many other activities.  I will never forget all of you and your families, and I am totally humbled by the honor you have shown me in letting me teach and love your children.

        We had a wonderful “Stone Soup” party last week!  Everyone brought their ingredient on time, and we prepared our soup together in the morning.  My rule is that all the students try at least one bite of the soup, and most really loved it.  It was quite a fun day.

        This will be the last week of homework and Spelling Tests.  We are still working hard reviewing and expanding on many subject areas.  All of the First Graders have done very well academically this year.  I am proud of the progress which was made.  They have grown physically, academically, socially, and spiritually and will continue learning and growing in second grade.  I love them all (which I tell them every day!), and I am much honored to have been part of their lives.  Several are getting kind of sad about leaving, but I tell them to come visit me often because I will be right next door!

        I also tell all of my First Graders that I would like them to write me cards or letters during the summer.  I say that if they do write me, I promise to write them back.  I still correspond with students who are now in high school!  Here is my mailing address:

        This Thursday will be our First Grade traditional “Stone Soup” party.  During our healthy eating unit in science, I always introduce the classic children’s story, “Stone Soup.”  It is a story about caring and sharing, as well as, preparing a delicious vegetable soup.  By the way, it does have stones in it!  Don’t worry; your first grader will explain everything Thursday afternoon!

        Your child has volunteered to bring a specific ingredient for our soup Thursday which is listed on the following letter.  Please do not cut, slice, or prepare your item in any way.  The children prepare everything, with supervision of course.  The other important aspect of this activity is that it is prepared first thing in the morning—please don’t forget to send in the item with your child’s homework.  We can not use it if it comes in at lunchtime!!!!  I don’t want anyone to be excluded so please remember to send it in the morning.  Also, I have no place to store anything so don’t send in your item until Thursday!

        Friday will be Free Dress for First Grade because we brought in the most Spell-A-Thon money!  We will also have board games and videos in the afternoon that day.

Dear First Grade Parents,

        On this Thursday, May 26, your First Grader will be making

“Stone Soup.”  This fun activity goes along with our healthy eating lessons we have been learning in science.

        According to the classic children’s story, everyone contributes to the soup, and we would like to do this as a class.

        Your child has volunteered to bring:

        Please have your child bring this item to school Thursday morning.  We will be preparing the soup the first thing so it will not work if you bring the item at lunchtime.  Please do not peel, slice, or in any way prepare this item.  We will do it together that morning.  We will be eating our “Stone Soup” later Thursday afternoon so your child will still need lunch for that day.

        This is a First Grade Tradition, and I thank you for your cooperation!!!

        I hope everyone had a fun time at our wild and rainy FunFair!  Thank you again Ms. Rose for organizing our First Grade booth.  I worked in the Teachers’ booth so I didn’t get to see a lot of you; I hope everyone was on time and had a good time!

        According to the school calendar tutoring ends this week.  I have included a letter giving information about our O.L.A. Summer School.  I hope many of you will take advantage of this program to keep your new “second grader” on top of his/her skills during our long summer break.  Ms. Forbush will be conducting the primary summer program for the first time and Ms. Manel is taking a break.  I think it would be very beneficial for all of our new second graders to attend summer school and get acquainted with their new teacher!

        I also included a letter regarding our new science nutrition unit.  Next week you will be receiving information about our traditional “Stone Soup” party!  Please don’t worry, your First Grader will explain everything.

        Please remember to send in fresh flowers for the Mary statue all this month!  Also, continue to check the school calendar and Helpful Reminders for important end-of-the-year activities.

        Thank you all for a wonderful Teacher Appreciation Week!!!  I love all of my gifts, and I am especially grateful for the new CD player!  The last one I had gave out during rehearsal for our P.T.G. program last February, and this new one is fantastic!!!  Thank you to all who helped Ms. Rose purchase this for me.  The lunch provided by the School/P.T.G. Board and Room Parents was fantastic!!!!  I also really loved my huge bouquet of flowers!!  Thank you all from the bottom of my heart!

        Several of you joined us for Mass and the May Crowning last Friday.  It was a beautiful event and our Mary statue looked wonderful.  If you can, periodically send in more flowers during this month as we honor Mary the mother of Jesus.

        This coming weekend is FUNFAIR!!!!  Be sure you have signed up with Rose for our First Grade booth and clean-up or set-up.  I will be there in the Teachers’ booth for my shift.  Let’s make this event the best ever!!  Bring all of your friends!!!  As usual, please check the school calendar and Helpful Reminders for all of the upcoming events, free dress days, etc.
