First Grade Homework Sheet

Week of June 11, 2012

I can’t believe that this is our last week of school for 2011-2012!  We have had an excellent year of learning and growing together.  I am very proud of these First Graders and I truly enjoyed sharing my last year of First Grade with them.  I know that they are ready for Second Grade and will continue to improve and excel.

I would like to thank all of you who have supported and helped me this year.  Special thanks go to Heather and Paula who have done such an outstanding job as Room Parents.  I have enjoyed working with all of you parents, grandparents, and families of these precious children; it is always a partnership in the development of Active Catholics, Lifelong Learners, Responsible Citizens, and Ambassadors of Hope which are the Schoolwide Learning Expectations of Our Lady of the Assumption School.  Thank you for everything you have done to make this year successful and special.

I hope you all have a wonderful, relaxing, and fun summer vacation and look forward to seeing you next year!  Please keep your children physically and mentally active; give them good books to read, games to play, sports to enjoy, trips to the library, museums, and interesting places, and above all attend Mass regularly.  I always tell my students that I would love to receive letters from them.  If they WRITE me (not email please), I promise to write them back!  I would love to hear about their vacation.  My mailing address is:

Thank you again and God Bless you and your family.

Thank you all for providing all of the ingredients for our annual Stone Soup Party.  The students had a great time preparing and eating our Stone Soup!  The 2nd Grade and the 6th Grade also came to our classroom and enjoyed our soup, plus several of the 8th Graders!

This week will culminate with our class Mass on Friday, June 1st at 8:15.  We have the honor of preparing the Readings, the Petitions, and the Gifts.  Every student will participate in the Mass by singing, saying the responses, coming to the altar for a blessing, and sharing in the most important liturgy of our faith.  We would love to have our parents join us in this celebration.  Please plan on attending if you are able and sit right behind our class in Church.

Every year during the week of our class Mass I ask parents to donate to our Church’s food pantry to help the less fortunate.  I would like every student if possible to bring one or more canned food items which will be brought up with the gifts during our class Mass on Friday.  Please donate whatever you are able which teaches our children to share.

First Grade Homework Sheet

Week of May 21, 2012

This Thursday will be our First Grade traditional “Stone Soup” party.  During our healthy eating unit in science, I always introduce the classic children’s story, “Stone Soup.”  It is a story about caring and sharing, as well as, preparing a delicious vegetable soup.  By the way, it does have stones in it!  Don’t worry; your first grader will explain everything Thursday afternoon!

Your child has volunteered to bring a specific ingredient for our soup Thursday which is listed on the following letter.  Please do not cut, slice, or prepare your item in any way.  The children prepare everything, with supervision of course.  The other important aspect of this activity is that it is prepared first thing in the morning—please don’t forget to send in the item with your child’s homework.  We can not use it if it comes in at lunchtime.  I don’t want anyone to be excluded so please remember to send it in the morning.  Also, I have no place to store anything so don’t send in your item until Thursday!

First Grade Homework Sheet

Week of May 7, 2012

As I am writing this, it is the day before our P.T.G. program.  I am confident that our class will have done an excellent job, and I would like to congratulate all of our students on their performance!  I would also like to thank Ms. Randi and Ms. Martinez for helping us coordinate, organize, and rehearse our program many, many times!!!  Thanks go out to Ms. Martinez’ friend who painted our scenery and our cow!

This Wednesday, May 9, and next Wednesday, May 16, will be our last days of tutoring before school for the year.  We will not be having any more organized Learning Centers this year either.  We have so many upcoming end-of-the-year events and projects to complete that we always seem to need more time.  Thank you, thank you, thank you to all of our volunteers who have helped facilitate Learning Centers.  The students have loved this experience, and I couldn’t have done it without you!!!

I don’t know where the time has gone this year.  We have just over a month to go before Second Grade!  I encourage you to take advantage of Ms. Manel’s Summer School program to keep academic skills sharp.

We still have a lot to do in First Grade so let’s keep everyone healthy, on-time, and committed to making this the best learning year ever.  Make sure your child has adequate school supplies for the end of the year; many students need glue and glue sticks.  As always, please check the school calendar and Helpful Reminders regularly for important dates and events.

First Grade Homework Sheet

Week of April 30, 2012

This is the big week for our P.T.G. Performance!  We will have a Dress Rehearsal on Thursday, May 3 at 12:30 in the Hall.  The evening performance will begin at 6:00 pm.  I need all students to be in the First Grade classroom at 5:45 in costume!!!

All parents, grandparents, etc. may go to the Hall.  After our performance I would appreciate it if the parents would pick up their child at the classroom right after we exit the stage.  You may return to watch the other classes perform.

All students need to bring their costumes to school Thursday morning for our Dress Rehearsal.  Please have your child’s costume in a bag with their name on it!  There will be no homework this week nor Spelling words.  We will also not have Learning Centers this week.  We have lots of rehearsing to do!

This Friday, May 4th, will be our annual Crowning of Mary beginning with Mass at 8:15 followed by the Rosary procession and Crowning ceremony.  It is a beautiful event and all students are encouraged to bring flowers that day and during the month of May to honor our Blessed Mother.

All students who participate in the P.T.G. performances on Thursday may have free dress the following Monday, May 7.  Also, just a note regarding the afternoon Dress Rehearsal:  all adults should sit along the sides of the hall or in the back so the school students can see.  Of course, for the evening performance you may sit anywhere!

First Grade Homework Sheet

Week of April 16, 2012

Welcome back!!  I hope you all had a blessed and fun Easter Vacation.  We are in the home stretch now to the end of the year.  Our students will be second graders before they know it!!!

I hope you have started to get your child’s P.T.G. Program costume together.  As I indicated in the last letter before Easter I would like the boys to wear jeans/overalls, plaid shirt, straw hat, etc. something to look like a farmer.  The girls should wear long skirts, aprons, bonnets, etc. something to look like a farmer’s wife.  A few students have specific costume instructions (I am referring to my “green people” and our “goose”); they know who they are!  We are rehearsing everyday, and I know they will do a great job with our musical “Jack and the Beanstalk” program.

First Grade Homework Sheet Week of April 2, 1012

First Grade Homework Sheet

Week of April 2, 2012

I would like to wish you all a very special Holy Week and blessed Easter celebration.  I can’t believe how fast this school year has gone; our First Graders are getting excited about Second Grade already.  They have learned so much and made excellent progress all year.  We still have a lot to cover so please help me keep our students on track and on task!

There will be no homework this week.  There will be no Learning Centers this week either.  We have special Holy Week events scheduled in the morning on Wednesday and Thursday.  We are concentrating on Holy Week, and I have included a special “Easter Cookie” recipe that I hope you can take the time to make.  It will be a very nice addition to your holiday preparation, and I know that our children love to help!

Take care and have a relaxing and fun Easter Vacation!  Please be sure to attend Mass and many of the other liturgical celebrations and prayer services offered at Our Lady of the Assumption.  Ask your First Grader to tell you about Holy Week; they know all about it!

Just a reminder:  school will dismiss at 12:00 on Holy Thursday and there will be no after school care that day.  All students need to be picked up by 12:15.  Also, all of the many items which are currently in the Lost and Found will be put out on tables by the Mary statue after school Mon.-Wed. this week.  Please check there for any items your child has misplaced.

We have begun rehearsal for our upcoming P.T.G. program which will be on Thursday, May 3, 2012.  We are doing a musical version of Jack and the Beanstalk.  We are learning ten songs and some students have individual lines to memorize.

                                                        Continued…

Most of the program will be performed as choral singing, but we do need costumes for everyone and some help with minimal scenery.  I have planned on groups of students singing and reciting lines together which is easier and more fun.  Certain students will receive individual costume assignments, but basically I would like all of the boys to dress like farmers—jeans or overalls with plaid or bright-colored shirts.  If they have a straw hat, that would be great too!  I would like the girls to wear long skirts with aprons and blouses or shirts.  If they have an old-fashioned bonnet, that would also be great!

The whole class has been learning the songs for a few weeks, and if your student has individual lines to memorize, I will send home a copy for them to practice over vacation.  I have done previous musicals from the same company; the songs are easy to learn and cleverly written.  I am sure the current second graders could sing all of the “Earthworm” songs we learned last year!

I am hoping someone will volunteer to do our scenery for the performance.  What I need is a backdrop of floor to ceiling butcher paper hung on the back wall of the stage.  I have a picture of basically a wall of brick and windows painted on the paper with the beanstalk showing in the windows.  If you would like to help with the scenery, please let me know.  We have the materials here at school, and we just need someone to paint.  If you could share your artistic talent, let me know as soon as possible.  Thank you in advance; it will be a great show!!!

First Grade Homework Sheet

Week of March 19, 2012

The students did very well on the Spell-A-Thon test last Friday.  We had several 100%, and quite a few missed only one or two!  That is quite an achievement on a 40-word spelling test for first grade.  Now it is important that you collect and turn in all of the money which was pledged.  Please send it in with your child and turn it in to ME, not the office!!!  Each teacher is responsible for collecting and recording the money.  Whatever money is turned in will be sent to the office each day, but I need to make a notation on my record sheet.  Thank you very much, and thank the volunteers who made this exercise run smoothly!

Also on the subject of collections…please send in your child’s Lent Mission Box this week or next week.  Thank you for all that you are able to contribute.

I still need one or two people to volunteer to help with Learning Centers on Thursdays.  So far it is usually Mrs. Quintana and I only so if you are able to help, please let me know. Thanks!

First Grade Homework Sheet

Week of Feb. 20, 2012

This week begins the holy season of Lent.  We prepare for our great celebration of Christ’s death and Resurrection on Easter.  Your children are learning that Lent does not just mean “giving up” things for Catholics.  We make sacrifices, do good deeds, give alms, and take time for meaningful prayer.  Lent begins on Ash Wednesday.  This Wednesday we will attend Mass at 8:15 and receive our ashes.  Mass, of course, means full uniform (long pants for boys and dresses for girls).  We will not be having Learning Centers that day so perhaps many of you can attend Mass with us.

This Friday, Feb. 24 the second trimester Report Cards will be distributed.  All of your child’s graded papers will be returned after Report Cards go home.

The students are really enjoying Learning Centers, and I appreciate the volunteers who have helped so far.  We still need more adult volunteers, especially on Thursdays so if you are available, we would love to have you join us!
