First Grade Homework Sheet Week of April 2, 1012

First Grade Homework Sheet

Week of April 2, 2012

I would like to wish you all a very special Holy Week and blessed Easter celebration.  I can’t believe how fast this school year has gone; our First Graders are getting excited about Second Grade already.  They have learned so much and made excellent progress all year.  We still have a lot to cover so please help me keep our students on track and on task!

There will be no homework this week.  There will be no Learning Centers this week either.  We have special Holy Week events scheduled in the morning on Wednesday and Thursday.  We are concentrating on Holy Week, and I have included a special “Easter Cookie” recipe that I hope you can take the time to make.  It will be a very nice addition to your holiday preparation, and I know that our children love to help!

Take care and have a relaxing and fun Easter Vacation!  Please be sure to attend Mass and many of the other liturgical celebrations and prayer services offered at Our Lady of the Assumption.  Ask your First Grader to tell you about Holy Week; they know all about it!

Just a reminder:  school will dismiss at 12:00 on Holy Thursday and there will be no after school care that day.  All students need to be picked up by 12:15.  Also, all of the many items which are currently in the Lost and Found will be put out on tables by the Mary statue after school Mon.-Wed. this week.  Please check there for any items your child has misplaced.

We have begun rehearsal for our upcoming P.T.G. program which will be on Thursday, May 3, 2012.  We are doing a musical version of Jack and the Beanstalk.  We are learning ten songs and some students have individual lines to memorize.

                                                        Continued…

Most of the program will be performed as choral singing, but we do need costumes for everyone and some help with minimal scenery.  I have planned on groups of students singing and reciting lines together which is easier and more fun.  Certain students will receive individual costume assignments, but basically I would like all of the boys to dress like farmers—jeans or overalls with plaid or bright-colored shirts.  If they have a straw hat, that would be great too!  I would like the girls to wear long skirts with aprons and blouses or shirts.  If they have an old-fashioned bonnet, that would also be great!

The whole class has been learning the songs for a few weeks, and if your student has individual lines to memorize, I will send home a copy for them to practice over vacation.  I have done previous musicals from the same company; the songs are easy to learn and cleverly written.  I am sure the current second graders could sing all of the “Earthworm” songs we learned last year!

I am hoping someone will volunteer to do our scenery for the performance.  What I need is a backdrop of floor to ceiling butcher paper hung on the back wall of the stage.  I have a picture of basically a wall of brick and windows painted on the paper with the beanstalk showing in the windows.  If you would like to help with the scenery, please let me know.  We have the materials here at school, and we just need someone to paint.  If you could share your artistic talent, let me know as soon as possible.  Thank you in advance; it will be a great show!!!
